So here is Rex walking the streets of Baghdad. I love this picture. It just seems to speak of Rex. He is in a typically falsely humble pose as if saying "what? you're taking my picture?", but really loving having his picture taken. I know because that's me all over too. I'd love to ramble on here about how handsome he is, but he seems to only send me pictures with his hat and sunglasses on. Now i understand it is bright, the temperature is high and the sun is out, but can you not take them off for the picture? I have a whole bunch of pictures he mailed me and emailed me where he looks just like this. I can't show anyone what he looks like. Nor can I moon over his picture longingly and stare into his (photographed) eyes. So, of course when he called I whined to him and he has since taken and posted some pictures where he specifically took off his hat and sunglasses. what a great boyfriend.

I also got some really interesting pictures. He sent me a picture of threee small children whom, he says, are always begging them for food and water. Now, rex finds them a nuisance (which makes me cringe and want to let loose one of my common rampages of Laura-ness in the form of big words and sympathy for underprivileged children), apparently they follow them non stop and pull on their weapons and armour for attention. He said it always neat to see them though because the highlight of their day is watching the American convoy go by. In the picture you can see the amazement on their faces. The innocence of young boys who like to see big trucks and humvees. It's nice to see that small boys who live in an occupied city, constantly faced with the brutalities of war, terror, death, still have enough of a child mindset to want to see a parade of trucks.
This morning i i spoke to him on the phone and he told me about his day (which had already come to an end-8 hour time difference) . He was taking a shipment of food to the Iraqi military manning the voting polls. There was so many children begging around the truck so he started opening the boxes of food and picking out the mini boxes of frosted flakes and fruit loops and started throwing them to the kids (he was on top of the truck). Then he saw a man with several wives who was not joining in with the other adults who had joined the kids in pushing around the truck. so he got off the truck and took a whole box of food over to the man. The man was so grateful and began talking to Rex. The interpretor started laughing and told Rex that the man was offering one of his wives as a token of appreciation. Rex, of course, told the man no thank you, he had a girlfriend back home (thanks babe!). So the man then offered to just lend out one of the wives for a few hours, knowing that Rex would not be seeing his girlfriend for a while. Once again, Rex declined gratefully. I told him he's a sucker. Then a little 12 year old girl told him in her broken english that she wanted to marry him. I have some fierce competition it seems.

hey elsie
the fact that you put such a positive attitude and positive tone when talking about rex and that hes away, it shows how strong you really are. i fear the day that alan leaves, and i fear that day is only months away. the bravery that we stand when our men are away is the same amount of bravery they have choising this life style, and living this lifestlye. yet on a completely different scale. whether or not i make sense, im not sure. regardless, you are so open-minded that its not a wonder your relationship can with-stand so much. even though its a career, unless you are directly affected by it, its hard to really understand!
elsie, im so glad you are back in ontario, jealous a little bit as well, but truly happy for you. its your home really....among all the places we call home. the places, the people, and the sense of freedom.
welcome back, and congrats on loving your job!!!! you do know somewhere as to where your future has gone im sure. just think of the similarities on all your past and current jobs!!! miniture people everywhere. how could a people lover like you, not work with people, especially wonderful children. its gotta refresh your dreams and goals, watching them make theres!!!
take care my dear!!!!
